What's Included

## What Is Bathroom Potlight Installation?

Potlight Installation Toronto provides shower and tub potlights, vanity and mirror lighting, ensuite and powder room lighting, and exhaust fan replacement throughout Toronto, Ontario, backed by 22 years of ESA-licensed residential electrical work across the GTA. Bathroom recessed lighting needs wet-rated or damp-rated fixtures depending on the distance to the shower and tub. We use IC-rated, wet-listed potlights with sealed lenses and vapour barrier gaskets over the shower, and damp-rated, air-tight fixtures for the general ceiling. Vanity lights are placed in front of the mirror so they light your face, not the top of your head. Every bathroom project includes GFCI verification and an exhaust fan review, since a weak fan leaves moisture in the ceiling. A standard four-light bathroom runs $450 to $750 depending on ceiling access and fan work, and most bathrooms are finished in three to five hours.

Here's a bathroom job we do all the time. An ensuite in a 1990s Thornhill two-storey has one vanity bar, a dark shower corner and a fan that barely moves the steam. We'll add a wet-rated potlight over the shower, three damp-rated fixtures across the ceiling and a vanity pair in front of the mirror. While we're up there, we check the GFCI and replace the tired fan if it's not keeping up. It's usually done by early afternoon, and the mirror doesn't fog the way it used to.

## What Types of Bathroom Lighting Do We Install?

A bathroom has different zones with different rules. Here’s how we light each one.

### Shower and tub zone

Wet-rated, IC-rated, air-tight fixtures with a sealed lens. These can handle direct spray and constant steam.

### Vanity and mirror zone

One or two potlights placed in front of the mirror, not behind you. That puts light on your face instead of casting shadows under your eyes.

### General ceiling

Damp-rated, air-tight fixtures that handle humidity. They’re sealed at the ceiling so moist air doesn’t leak into the attic.

### Powder rooms

Often just one or two small potlights, sometimes with a pendant over the vanity. Quick jobs that make a big difference for guests.

## How Much Do Bathroom Potlights Cost in Toronto?

A standard four-light bathroom runs $450 to $750. Here’s what affects the price.

| Cost factor | Lower end | Higher end |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fixture count | 4 lights | 6 lights in a large ensuite |
| Access | Attic above | Finished floor above |
| Fan work | Fan’s fine, review only | Fan replacement and new venting |
| Ceiling | Flat drywall | Sloped or plaster ceiling |
| Renovation stage | Open ceiling during reno | Finished ceiling, fished wires |

Every quote includes wet and damp-rated fixtures, GFCI verification, patching, cleanup and a written workmanship warranty.

## When Should You Upgrade Bathroom Lighting?

Most people call when they’re renovating, since the ceiling and walls are already open. Others call because the shower corner’s dark or the mirror light is harsh. Winter is another trigger. With short days and dark mornings from November to February, a dim bathroom makes getting ready harder than it needs to be. If you’re finishing a basement bathroom, we’ll often light it as part of the

## Common Bathroom Lighting Problems We Fix

### Damp-rated fixture inside the shower

It wasn’t rated for direct spray. We replace it with a wet-rated, sealed fixture.

### Shadows at the mirror

The light’s behind you or directly overhead. We move vanity lights in front of the mirror.

### Foggy mirror and peeling paint

A weak or broken exhaust fan. We review it and quote a replacement if it’s not keeping up.

### Moisture stains around old pot lights

Old housings that weren’t air-tight let steam into the attic. We replace them with sealed, air-tight fixtures and patch around them.

## Bathroom Potlights vs. Vanity Bars and Flush Mounts

A vanity bar over the mirror is fine, but it leaves the shower and corners dark. A single flush mount lights the middle of the room and not much else. Properly rated

recessed potlights

light every zone, including inside the shower, and they sit flush so there’s nothing to collect dust or dead bugs. Paired with a working fan and a tested GFCI, they’re the safest and cleanest option for a bathroom you’ll use every day.

Why Homeowners Pick Us

## Why Choose Potlight Installation Toronto for Bathroom Potlights?

### The right rating in the right spot

Wet-rated over the shower, damp-rated elsewhere. It's what the code expects and it's what keeps fixtures working for years.

### Sealed against moisture

Air-tight fixtures with gaskets stop warm, wet air from getting into the ceiling and attic, which helps prevent mould.

### GFCI checked every time

We test the bathroom GFCI on every job and replace it if it doesn't trip properly. It's a basic safety step.

### Fan reviewed while we're there

A weak fan lets steam sit on the ceiling. We check airflow and quote a quieter, stronger fan if yours isn't keeping up.

Questions and Answers

## Bathroom Potlights FAQs

Can you put a potlight directly over the shower?

Yes, as long as it's a wet-rated fixture. Wet-location potlights have a sealed lens and gasket so water and steam can't get in. We use IC-rated, air-tight, wet-listed fixtures over showers and tubs, which is what the Ontario Electrical Safety Code calls for in that zone.

What's the difference between wet-rated and damp-rated?

Wet-rated fixtures can handle direct water spray, so they go inside the shower or right over the tub. Damp-rated fixtures handle humidity but not direct water, so they're fine on the general bathroom ceiling. Using a damp-rated fixture inside the shower is a common mistake we fix.

How many potlights does a bathroom need?

Most bathrooms use four: one over the shower or tub, one or two over the vanity and one for the general ceiling. A large ensuite with a separate tub, glass shower and double vanity might need six. Powder rooms often only need one or two.

Do you replace bathroom exhaust fans?

Yes. We review the fan on every bathroom job. If it's noisy, weak or venting into the attic instead of outside, we'll quote a replacement. A properly sized fan clears steam faster, which protects your new fixtures and ceiling paint, especially in humid July and August.

Why do you test the GFCI?

A GFCI outlet cuts power in a fraction of a second if it detects a fault, which is critical near water. Older ones can fail without anyone noticing. We test it on every bathroom job and replace it if it doesn't trip properly. It's quick and it matters.

Which colour temperature works in a bathroom?

3000K to 3500K works best. It's warm enough to feel comfortable but bright and accurate enough for shaving or makeup at the vanity. We avoid very cool 5000K light in bathrooms because it makes skin look grey, especially on dark winter mornings.

Can you install bathroom potlights during a renovation?

Yes, and it's the easiest time. If the ceiling's open, we can wire and set the fixtures before drywall. We'll coordinate with your contractor so the fixtures, fan and GFCI are in place when the tiler and drywaller arrive.

How long does a bathroom install take?

Most four-light bathrooms take three to five hours, including the GFCI check. If we're replacing the exhaust fan too, add an hour or two. You'll be able to use the bathroom again the same day once we've tested everything and cleaned up.
