What Types of Bathroom Lighting Do We Install?
A bathroom has different zones with different rules. Here’s how we light each one.
Shower and tub zone
Wet-rated, IC-rated, air-tight fixtures with a sealed lens. These can handle direct spray and constant steam.
Vanity and mirror zone
One or two potlights placed in front of the mirror, not behind you. That puts light on your face instead of casting shadows under your eyes.
General ceiling
Damp-rated, air-tight fixtures that handle humidity. They’re sealed at the ceiling so moist air doesn’t leak into the attic.
Powder rooms
Often just one or two small potlights, sometimes with a pendant over the vanity. Quick jobs that make a big difference for guests.
How Much Do Bathroom Potlights Cost in Toronto?
A standard four-light bathroom runs $450 to $750. Here’s what affects the price.
| Cost factor | Lower end | Higher end |
|---|---|---|
| Fixture count | 4 lights | 6 lights in a large ensuite |
| Access | Attic above | Finished floor above |
| Fan work | Fan’s fine, review only | Fan replacement and new venting |
| Ceiling | Flat drywall | Sloped or plaster ceiling |
| Renovation stage | Open ceiling during reno | Finished ceiling, fished wires |
Every quote includes wet and damp-rated fixtures, GFCI verification, patching, cleanup and a written workmanship warranty.
When Should You Upgrade Bathroom Lighting?
Most people call when they’re renovating, since the ceiling and walls are already open. Others call because the shower corner’s dark or the mirror light is harsh. Winter is another trigger. With short days and dark mornings from November to February, a dim bathroom makes getting ready harder than it needs to be. If you’re finishing a basement bathroom, we’ll often light it as part of the basement potlight job.
Common Bathroom Lighting Problems We Fix
Damp-rated fixture inside the shower
It wasn’t rated for direct spray. We replace it with a wet-rated, sealed fixture.
Shadows at the mirror
The light’s behind you or directly overhead. We move vanity lights in front of the mirror.
Foggy mirror and peeling paint
A weak or broken exhaust fan. We review it and quote a replacement if it’s not keeping up.
Moisture stains around old pot lights
Old housings that weren’t air-tight let steam into the attic. We replace them with sealed, air-tight fixtures and patch around them.
Bathroom Potlights vs. Vanity Bars and Flush Mounts
A vanity bar over the mirror is fine, but it leaves the shower and corners dark. A single flush mount lights the middle of the room and not much else. Properly rated recessed potlights light every zone, including inside the shower, and they sit flush so there’s nothing to collect dust or dead bugs. Paired with a working fan and a tested GFCI, they’re the safest and cleanest option for a bathroom you’ll use every day.
