What Types of Living Room Lighting Do We Install?
A living room has to handle a lot: movie nights, board games, reading, and the odd holiday party. Layered lighting on separate dimmers is the fix, and here’s how we build it.
Ambient potlights
Four to eight slim LED potlights spread evenly across the ceiling for general light. These go on one dimmer and do most of the work.
Accent and art lights
Gimbal potlights angled at a fireplace, bookshelf or painting. They’re on a separate dimmer so you can leave just the accents on in the evening.
Perimeter wall washing
Lights placed about two feet from a feature wall to graze stone, brick or wood panelling. It makes a room feel bigger without adding more fixtures.
Centrepiece fixtures and fans
If you want to keep a chandelier or ceiling fan, we wire it separately so the potlights and the centrepiece work independently.
How Much Do Living Room Potlights Cost in Toronto?
Single rooms land between $600 and $1,100. Main floor packages of 10 to 15 lights start at $1,050. Here’s what shifts the price.
| Cost factor | Lower end | Higher end |
|---|---|---|
| Fixture count | 6 lights | 10 lights plus accents |
| Ceiling | Flat drywall, 8 feet | Plaster or 9 to 10 foot ceilings |
| Dimmers | One zone | Two or three zones |
| Centrepiece | Leave as is | Remove, patch and redistribute |
| Fan work | None | Ceiling fan with new wiring, from $350 |
Your written quote lists each of these, so there’s no guessing.
When Should You Upgrade Living Room Lighting?
The most common trigger is winter. Toronto’s short days make a dim living room feel gloomy by 4:30pm, and that’s when people notice the dark corners. Renovations are the second trigger: new floors, fresh paint or an open-concept wall removal leave the old lighting out of place. Spring listings are the third. If you’re selling in Leaside or Unionville, a well-lit living room photographs noticeably better.
Common Living Room Lighting Problems We Fix
One light in the middle of the room
It lights the coffee table and leaves the corners dark. We add potlights around the edges so light reaches every seat.
Dimmers that buzz or flicker
An old incandescent dimmer paired with LED fixtures. We swap in a Lutron Diva, Maestro or ELV dimmer matched to the driver.
Cracked plaster from a rushed install
We patch it and redo the layout, cutting slowly with dust shrouds so the ceiling holds up.
Ceiling fan wobble
Usually a fan hung on a regular light box. We install a fan-rated box braced to the joists.
Potlights vs. Floor Lamps and Track Lighting
Lamps are flexible but eat floor space and leave the ceiling dark. Track lighting works in lofts but looks busy in a traditional living room. Potlights sit flush, spread light evenly and work with whatever centrepiece you’ve got. With two or three dimmer zones, they cover everything from a quiet evening to a full house during the holidays.
