Here's a typical landscape job. A family in a Woodbridge detached home already has soffit potlights, but the front walk and the big maple on the lawn go dark after sunset. We book it for May, once the ground's thawed. That evening the walkway's safe for the kids, and the house looks finished from the street.

When Is the Best Time for Landscape Lighting?

April to October, once the ground’s thawed and before it freezes again. Spring is popular because people want the yard ready for summer barbecues and long June evenings. Fall is the other busy window, when shorter days make a dark walkway feel unsafe. If you’re redoing interlock or garden beds, coordinate with your landscaper so we can run cable before the pavers go down.

How much does landscape lighting cost in Toronto?

Residential packages run $1,500 to $4,000 depending on how many fixtures you want and how long the cable runs are. Our published 8-light residential package starts at $2,000. It includes fixtures, low-voltage cable, a transformer, a photocell timer, installation and cleanup.

When can you install landscape lighting?

We install landscape lighting from April to October, when the ground isn't frozen and we can trench cable safely. Spring fills up fast, so if you want lights for summer entertaining, book your consultation in March. Fall installs are great for lighting the walk before dark December evenings.

What's the difference between low-voltage and line-voltage?

Low-voltage systems run at 12 volts through a transformer, so they're safer around kids, pets and garden work. Line-voltage runs at full household voltage and needs deeper burial and heavier conduit. For most residential gardens, low-voltage is the better choice. We'll recommend line-voltage only when a fixture needs it.

How deep do you bury the cable?

Low-voltage direct burial cable is typically buried a few inches below the surface, deep enough to protect it from lawn aerators and light digging. We route it along edges and away from spots where you plant bulbs or dig often. Line-voltage cable needs much deeper burial, which we handle when required.

How far apart should path lights be?

Usually six to eight feet apart, staggered on alternating sides of the walkway. Lining them up in straight rows on both sides looks like a runway. Staggering gives a natural look and still lights every step. We'll mark the layout before we dig.

Can landscape lights turn on automatically?

Yes. A photocell on the transformer turns the lights on at dusk, and a timer can turn them off at a set time, like midnight. They adjust with the seasons on their own. If you'd like app control, we can add a smart outdoor plug or switch.

Will landscape lights survive a Toronto winter?

Quality fixtures will. We use solid brass or powder-coated aluminum fixtures with sealed LEDs rated for outdoor use. They handle snow, freeze-thaw cycles and road salt near the driveway. Cheap plastic solar lights are what usually fail after one winter.

Can you add landscape lights to my soffit lighting?

Yes, and it's a popular combo. Soffit lights wash the house, and landscape lights handle paths, trees and gardens. We can plan both together and often set them on the same schedule. Many clients book soffit lights in spring and add landscape lighting the same visit.
